What stood out during the initial site visit was that the building was constructed in a party-wall typology—a format in which adjacent structures share side walls and are arranged in a linear row. This urban pattern stems from the ‘machiya’ system of land division, introduced during the Japanese colonial period, where lots were subdivided narrowly based on street frontage and extended deep into the block. The project sits within this still-visible historical grain of Seoul’s central districts.
At first glance, the interior appeared to be a low-ceilinged, single-story space. Yet in contrast to the external massing, the interior felt disproportionately compressed. Suspecting the presence of a residual volume, we proposed to dismantle the ceiling. The intervention revealed a hybrid structure—masonry walls below and a single-pitched timber roof above. What had been a confined 2.4-meter space unfolded into a soaring gabled volume nearly 5 meters high, releasing the latent depth that had long been hidden.
Above the ceiling, we discovered a charred attic structure, remnants of a previous fire. Wooden beams anchored to a rectangular truss supported the sloped roof. After removing the attic, the imprint of these beams remained etched into the walls, offering a potent architectural trace and becoming the starting point of the new design.
The interior composition centers around the presence and rhythm of this gable truss. We chose to reveal rather than overlay, stripping away accumulated finishes and exposing the textured mortar and raw concrete beneath. Furniture and fixtures were introduced with restraint, designed to function without disturbing the structure’s quiet tension and spatial voids.
Pause Namyeong is a space that commemorates the depth, memory, and materiality of an overlooked typology in Namyeong-dong. Beyond serving as a bar, it offers an atmosphere where food and conversation unfold within the grain of structure and the trace of time—an experience where architectural presence is both frame and companion.
퍼즈남영은 서울 용산구 숙대입구역 인근, 한강대로변 건물 2층을 개조한 바 & 레스토랑이다. 서울역과 용산역을 잇는 이 대로변은 오랜 시간 서울 도시 구조의 뼈대를 형성해온 역사적 축선이며, 도로를 따라 이어지는 건물들은 시대의 흔적을 간직한 채 도시의 풍경을 이루고 있다.
현장에 처음 방문했을 때, 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 이 건물이 맞벽 형식으로 지어졌다는 점이다. 한강대로를 따라 늘어선 건물들은 일제강점기 일본의 ‘마치야(町屋)’식 토지 분할 방식의 영향을 받아, 도로 접면을 기준으로 좁고 길게 나뉜 필지 위에 벽을 공유하며 가로로 연속 배치된 구조를 이루고 있다. 퍼즈남영이 위치한 건물 역시 이러한 도시 조직의 일부로 존재해왔다.
처음 내부에 들어섰을 때는 낮은 반자와 단층의 단순한 공간처럼 보였다. 그러나 외부에서 보이는 체적에 비해 내부 공간이 지나치게 작게 느껴졌고, 숨겨진 볼륨이 있을 것이라는 가능성에 주목하게 되었다. 천장을 걷어내고 내부 구조를 확인한 결과, 조적조 하부 구조와 목구조 경사지붕이 드러났으며, 기존 2.4m 높이였던 반자는 최대 5m에 이르는 박공지붕 체적으로 확장되었다. 숨겨져 있던 공간의 깊이가 비로소 드러난 순간이었다.
상부에는 화재의 흔적이 남은 목재 보들로 구성된 다락이 있었으며, 이 보들은 경사 지붕을 지탱하는 직사각형 트러스 구조에 연결되어 있었다. 다락을 철거한 후 벽면에 남은 보의 자국은 새로운 디자인의 출발점이 되었고, 공간의 시간성과 구조적 흔적을 드러내는 주요 단서가 되었다.
인테리어는 이 경사지붕 트러스의 존재감을 중심축으로 삼아 구성되었다. 공간에 축적된 시간을 드러내기 위해 오랜 시간 덧입혀졌던 벽 마감을 모두 걷어내고, 몰탈 아래 숨겨져 있던 콘크리트의 질감을 그대로 노출시켰다. 가구는 최소한으로 배치하여 구조가 가진 긴장과 여백을 해치지 않도록 설계하였다.
퍼즈남영은 남영동의 오래된 건축이 지닌 장소성과 시간의 흔적, 그리고 그 틈 사이로 드러난 물리적 깊이를 기념하는 공간이다. 이곳에서의 식사와 대화는 단순한 바의 기능을 넘어, 공간과 시간이 교차하는 결을 함께 음미하는 경험으로 이어진다.
