The typical method of one’s cognition of space is by through the body and we often misunderstand the interior as a separate entity from its whole; the insides of architecture is simply a collection and arrangement of surfaces. These surfaces conceal the multiple layers of information that all contributes to the space.
Converse to the generic method of drawing the visible surfaces, ‘Redection to Drawing’ is a project that traces and imagines the invisible layers. The meticulous process of surveying in detail revealed the original intent of the unknown architect. The result becomes a representation of the principals and values of the original.
도면환원
일상적으로 건물을 체험하는 방식은 어쩌면 공간에서 느끼는 몸의 감각에만 편중되어 있는지도 모른다. 건축이라는 것이 하나의 신체라면 실내공간은 입으로부터 항문으로 이어지는 소화기관처럼, 마치 내부인 것처럼 느껴지지만 사실은 외부공간과 동일한 ‘표면들’일 뿐이다. 이러한 표면들은 건물 속에 존재하는 건축의 다층적 차원들(구성의 개념, 다른 기관들과 그것을 구성하는 장기들, 뼈대와 살들과 혈관들 등)로의 접근을 차단한다. 이러한 상황을 반전시키기 위하여 건물의 표면만으로는 보이지 않는 건축을 추적하고, 상상하는 방식으로 ‘도면환원’을 제안한다. 건물을 들여다보고, 실측하고, 다양한 방식으로 측정하는 과정은 시간의 흔적이나 실용적 요구들로 인하여 변하기 전의 건물, 무명의 건축가가 이 건물을 설계하던 시점의 아이디어를 발견하게 해준다. 이 과정에서 도면은 단순히 재현의 결과물이 아니라 건물에 내재된 건축을 개념화하는 도구가 된다.
