Verdissage is a hybrid art space operated by a collective of art collectors, located on the second floor of Seoullo Tower in Toegye-ro, near Seoul Station. Working within tight budget constraints, the design embraces the raw physical conditions of the existing structure, building the space with minimal intervention.
The site had never been used. There were existing level changes in the floor, unfinished gypsum board walls, and a 4-meter-high ceiling exposing various pipes and mechanical systems.
While these physical conditions posed challenges for construction, they also became key elements in shaping the identity of the space.
The exposed steel deck plates and visible piping of the steel-frame structure gave the space a metallic texture unified under a grey-silver tone—what we came to define as our own “New White.”
The space is designed to accommodate three programs:
1. A gallery for exhibitions
2. A venue for parties and events
3. A short-term residency for international artists
Drawing inspiration from Andy Warhol’s studio, The Factory, we adopted a strategy that balances industrial materials with the demands of an art space.
The walls are clad in perforated galvanized steel panels, serving not only as display surfaces but also as functional backdrops for tools and hardware—flexible elements that shift in purpose depending on context.
At the center of the space, a movable wall system defines a residency zone that can open or close as needed.This flexible boundary allows the three programs to overlap and coexist, enabling fluid transitions and hybrid uses within a single spatial framework.
Suspended from the ceiling is a table-shaped Barrisol lighting fixture. In its default position, it floats at ceiling height, offering even illumination for exhibitions. For events, it lowers to table height, transforming into both a physical table and an ambient lighting source that casts a soft glow across the floor.
Rather than relying on a single function or strict spatial order, this project embraces the process of collision and overlap between different programs and materials.
Though it may appear unfamiliar at first, the space reflects the hybrid nature of contemporary art itself.
Gallery, studio, and party venue—these heterogeneous conditions coexist here, forming a kind of experimental field where new spatial sensations emerge.
Our intent was not to sum up the functions, but to offer an architectural experience born from the tensions and relationships between differing elements.
베르디사쥬: 아트컬렉터들의 아지트
베르디사쥬는 서울역 인근 퇴계로 ‘서울로 타워’ 2층에 위치한, 아트 컬렉터 집단이 운영하는 복합미술공간이다. 제한된 예산 속에서 기존 건축물이 지닌 물리적 조건을 수용하며, 최소한의 개입으로 공간을 구축했다.
현장은 한 번도 사용된 적 없는 상태로, 바닥에는 단차가 형성되어 있었고 벽체는 석고보드만 설치된 상태였으며, 4미터에 달하는 높은 천장에는 각종 설비 배관이 그대로 노출돼 있었다.
이러한 물리적 조건은 공사의 제약이 되었지만, 동시에 공간의 정체성을 형성하는 주요한 요소가 되었다.
철골 구조의 금속 데크플레이트와 노출 배관이 만들어내는 금속성의 물성은 은색(grey-silver)으로 통일되었고, 우리는 이를 'New White'로 정의했다.

우리는 앤디 워홀의 작업실 '팩토리'에서 아이디어를 얻어, 산업적 재료와 미술 공간의 긴장을 조율하는 전략을 선택했다. 벽체는 아연도 타공판으로 구성되었으며, 이는 갤러리 벽이자 작가의 작업 도구가 걸리는 배경이 되고, 상황에 따라 다양한 기능으로 변주되는 유연한 장치가 되었다.
중앙에는 이동식 벽체를 통해 열리고 닫히는 레지던시 공간을 배치했다. 이 가변적 경계는 세 가지 프로그램이 충돌하지 않으면서도 서로 중첩되어, 하나의 공간 안에서 유기적으로 전환되고 융합될 수 있도록 한다.
또한, 천장에는 테이블 형태의 바리솔 조명을 매달아 설치했다. 이 장치는 평소에는 천장의 높은 위치에서 갤러리를 위한 균일한 조명을 제공하다가, 파티 상황에서는 테이블 높이로 내려와 조명이 발밑을 비추는 간접조명이 되며 동시에 테이블로 기능한다.
이 공간은 단일한 기능이나 명확한 질서에 기대기보다는, 서로 다른 프로그램과 물성이 충돌하고 중첩되는 과정을 통해 완성된다.
다소 낯설게 느껴질 수도 있지만, 이는 오히려 현대미술의 혼성적 속성과도 닮아 있다.
전시장, 작업실, 파티장이라는 이질적인 조건들이 공존하며, 그 사이의 어딘가에서 새로운 감각이 생성되는 하나의 실험적 공간이 된다.
우리는 이를 통해 기능의 총합이 아니라, 서로 다른 요소들 간의 관계와 긴장이 만들어내는 공간적 경험을 제안하고자 했다.
